The Ashlad and the Hungry Troll App Review

Norwigian_fairytale

The Ashlad and the Hungry Troll book  for iphone, iPod and iPad is probably one of the scariest and violent children’s book I have ever came across in my life. Originally inspired from a Norwegian fairytale, a story of Ashlad who sets out in  the forest to chop the wood for his family.  While Ashlad works in the forest he gets into an argument with a great troll.

The application is very well made with great illustrations and very colourful graphics. Accompanied with Canadian accent voiceover makes the application more attractive. However, my concern is just about the story itself…

I don’t want to disclose the ending, but it involves eating competition, a knife and a dead troll with a wounded stomach and blood.  I really cant believe if this book is really addressed for children, in particular four years old ones, as it is stated  in the App Store. I’m sure my son would most definitely get a nightmare of this violent story

In conclusion, the storyline of this classical Norwegian fairytale is too brutal, violent and morally wrong since the targeted audience are mostly kids.

Maybe American kids are to sheltered? I mean, kids in Norway have been told these stories for hundreds of years, me and my kids included, and I’ve never heard ANYONE being terrified of these. Kids find them fun, and understand it’s fiction. Of course, adult Americans, now that’s a different story…

Your 4 year old is going to get a nightmare out of this? Come on, that’s nothing against some of our fairytales. This isn’t even remotely scary. I think that you may be a bit overprotective when it comes to this, I mean my friends and I have been told this story ever since we were kids, and none, I repeat none, of us have ever had a nightmare from this story.

Double standard from the most violent country on the western hemisphere.

    Haha, you amuse us Norwegians!

Oh, how fun! I think a lot of norwegians are “meeting themselves in the door” by this. This story is so deeply embedded in our culture and childhoods, and the Ashlad himself is sort of the incarnation of the norwegian identity. For anyone to find them scary is just not something I think most norwegians ever stopped to imagine until now.

This is just one story amongst many. Of course, we have a lot of stories with trolls in them, and I think the way we tell our kids about them, it is let on obviously that this is pure fiction, even so the kids understand. I guess it’s an education for the kids in separating reality and fiction. Also, kids love the big scary trolls, as we grown ups tend to impersonate them by goofily trampling around looking very silly indeed. I have never ever in my life heard of anyone actually being scared of trolls or this story, even though we have all grown up with it. But I it might be different in America.

I don’t think it’s possible to find this scary. Sure the actions could be scary enogh, if it wasn’t so comical. I, for one, have never met anyone who thinks that this fairytale is anything short of comical. I mean, what is more funny than a big stupid troll?

Oh, was it just me, or did you put the Eating competition as something REALLY scary? Then my typical saturday night would scare the crap out of your family.

I think that kids these days are smart enough to understand that this is pure fiction and that this scenario is rather unlikely. Btw, whats thet problem with kids running around slaying trolls;)
